Audio Engineering DegreeOur Sound Engineering course is for learners who want to master the recording side of sound engineering in their home studio setup, and get as close to master-quality results with what equipment they have available. The entire Sound Engineering course takes place in our custom Neve 8078 control room and specially built live area, undoubtedly one of the best non-orchestral commercial recording studios in the country. Jam-packed with sound engineering tips and recording techniques shared with you by the very same engineers who work in the studio daily on projects including Mark Ronson, Katy B, Noel Gallagher, Burial, Alice Gold, Tinchy Stryder and Jamie Woon to name but a few. The last three days are actual recording sessions with a view to get the master drums down with guides for everything else in session one, the next day, overdubs covering all of the other instruments plus instruments not in the band but in our course, followed by vocals and finishing up on your final day of recording. Total Sound Engineering course cost is £499.

Day 1 – The Beast

  • Digital and analogue –  getting the most out of the digital domain and why we sometimes use tape

Console principles are are the same whether you’re on a custom Neve 8078 or something less glamourous! This is a course first, but it’s an experience too.

Day 2 – Microphones

  • Different mic designs – what to use on what and why!
  • Using the right polar patterns
  • Mic placement

  • ‘Make a mic’ workshop

Day 3 – Band Recording Session

  • Setting up foldback tips for musicians
  • Kit positioning
  • All about gates in the record process
  • EQing drums to ‘tape’
  • Which mics to compress to ‘tape’ and why
  • Producer hat – what to record first, guides and setting up the record
  • Thinking about the final mix already – what we do and why we do it

Day 4 – Overdub SessionMixing Audio Desk

  • Acoustic, electric and bass guitar
  • Acoustic and electric piano
  • Synths – it’s not just about plugging them in and recording flat!
  • Percussion

Day 5 – Vocal Session

  • EQ and dynamics to ‘tape’
  • Tracking tips
  • BV shortcuts and editing
  • Melodyne and Autotune
  • Vocal arranging
  • Pre production processing
  • Preparing for the mix and what the mix engineer expects

Sessions times are 11pm – 18pm with one hour for lunch, and the dates are as follows:
